1. Summarize Bronfenbrenner's ecological model and describe why it is important for

them to be aware of this theory.

This is a theory which holds that development is influenced by several environmental

systems namely

a. Microsytem: These are the surroundings of an individual, for example, peers, school or

neighborhood. It is also where direct interactions with social agents take place;

individuals are not passive recipient of experiences in these settings.

b. Meso-sytems: These are relations between micro-systems. This involves connections

between family experiences and school experiences, family experiences and peer

experiences.

c. Exo-systems: These are connections between social settings in which oneself is not

majorly an active role and does not have the individual context, for example, husband’s

being late at home due experience at work may influence wife’s and child’s experience at

home hence causing conflict at home.

d. Macro-systems: This describes the people way of living which includes poverty,

socioeconomic and ethnicity.

c. Chro-systems: This refers to environmental events and transitions of the way of life of

individual as well as socio-historical circumstances. For example divorce transition.
