Rather than focus on the treatment of chronic disease, policies that influence population health tend to emphasize prevention and wellness; the reduction or elimination of waste and the eradication of health disparities based on race, ethnicity, language, income, gender, sexual orientation, disability and other factors. Consider a topic (mental health, HIV, opioid epidemic, pandemics, obesity, prescription drug prices, or many others) that rises to the presidential level. How did the current and previous presidents handle the problem? What would you do differently?

Scenario As a lead educator in your program, you ensure that you complete regular observations for all children in your care, seeing them as individuals. Now, you have been asked to conduct an assessment of your own observation practices with cultural, developmental, ethical, and linguistic lenses to ensure they are truly honoring each child as an individual. Instructions Step One: Complete an Observation Complete one observation/assessment using the video option below or conduct an observation in your program for a child between 6 weeks- 6 years old. Optional video: Free Play  Select one observation method (K-W-L, anecdotal, running record, time or event sample) to use during the observation. Complete the observation using the selected method. Step Two: Complete the Analysis What is the child able to do for each of the domains of development?  Provide at least one objective observation for each domain of development.  Describe at least one (1) of your state learning standards (developmental outcome) and how it is witnessed in your observation. After reading and considering the DAP Guidelines for Observation and Assessment, determine at least two ways the observation and assessment method aligned with the Guidelines. Incorporate specific examples from the observation notes. Identify one part of the observation and assessment process that could be improved to align with the DAP Guidelines for Observation and Assessment. Describe one suggestion you can do next time to improve alignment to the Guidelines.  Specifically address how cultural and language considerations might need to be incorporated into the observation practice.
