1. What do you think of the various provisions in the Health Ordinances of Pistoria,
Italy document? Do they make sense to some/any degree? (even if you know with
our modern conception of science and medicine that they are wrongheaded try to
"think like a historian" which means at least attempting to put ourselves into the
minds' of the people we are studying)
Provisions in the Health legislations of Pistoria formulated to prevent the spreading of the
plague as a reaction to the Black Death. The provisions involved improving the hygiene of the
environment to prevent the disease from further spreading. There was some degree of sense in
the measures put in place to stop the plague (Nohl & Clarke, 1961). Even though the belief that
foul air was responsible for the epidemic was wrong, the measures they initiated to prevent the
alleged source of the disease were reasonable considering the information that was available to
the people at the time of formulating the legislation because poor hygiene is one of the common
causes of infections.
2. What might explain reacting to the Black Death by blaming Jews and accusing them of
purposely poisoning wells to spread it? (again, try to think what they might have been
thinking)
The Jews were thought to be the primary reason for the Black Death. The reason for the
Europeans blaming the Jews for deliberately poisoning the wells was the fact that the Jews
seemed not to be affected by the plague. The Jewish communities in Europe during the time
when Black Death happened lived isolated lives in quarters and places that were not contacted by
