EFFECTIVENESS OF HUMOR IN PERSUASION
Persuasion plays a very critical in our communication with other people. Persuasion is an
attempt of changing an individual’s view concerning his/her counterpart. There exist many
tactics one can utilize to assist them in persuading someone to do whatever they want that
particular individual to do. Humor can be termed as a tool, which can be used in the persuasion
of others. The use of humor in the persuasion of others may have effects that are both positive
and negative. We can take a look at the effectiveness of the use of humor in persuasion and the
risks thereby of the use of humor in persuasion.
In persuasion, emotions play a very important role. One emotion which is commonly
used is humor. Humor can be termed as a quality which is known to cause amusement in
individuals. Humor is used by people to make others laugh, thereby making them happy and
putting them in a mood which is good. This causes individuals to view one as a person who is
likable thus making them as likable person, and they will be more comfortable in your presence.
Humor can be used to help “gain you attention, rapidly create rapport and make you and your
message more memorable” (Martin, 2007). Humor can also be said to help in the alleviation of
tension and stress in individuals. In cases whereby individuals lower their guard around a certain
person, they have a high likelihood of being persuaded by that person.
There are crucial factors worth remembering when using humor in the persuasion of an
individual. Humor ought to be used “in introduction, summarizing or highlighting certain points
which may be important so as to make them more gain more impact in the mind of the listener.”
(Lyttle, 2001). One can use humor i9n stating facts and not to make an attempt at persuading
them. The overuse of humor may bring a tendency to resistance among individuals and thus
bring irrelevance among them. It can also bring a feeling of you being funny on purpose and may
fail to take whatever is being said seriously.
