 The case for a change in legislation to protect Independently-Trained Assistance Dogs Prepared by: Letti Hellequin of Assistance Dog Aware Lise Marron of Capable Creatures Roger Fenn of Spectrum CIL Overview: Currently, the unclear and incomplete legislation surrounding Assistance Dogs is failing many Disabled People. Those who train their own dogs to mitigate their disabilities have no formal permissions or protections, and cannot currently obtain them as there is no way for an Independently-Trained dog to become accredited with the regulatory bodies. Included with this proposal are case studies from individuals who were unable to have their needs met through the existing charity system. Our proposed changes are: Legislative amendments Changes to the structure of Assistance Dogs UK (ADUK) to hold a register of approved dog trainers through which dogs could be trained to the Recognised Standard, and to allow for the assessment and accreditation of Independently Trained Dogs or; The founding of a new body, which would hold a register of approved dog trainers through which dogs could be trained to the Recognised Standard, and to allow for the assessment and accreditation of Independently Trained Dogs.
