Pros and Cons of DSM Diagnosis
Pros and Cons of Using DSM Diagnoses
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is the standard mental
disorders classification method used by mental health professionals in the United States. It
attempts to define criteria that help to differentiate one mental illness from another, reaching a
correct diagnosis and can be applied to an array of contexts such as behavioural, family or
systems and psychodynamic orientations. However, it is very unscientific and vague to create
differentiating lines.
One of the major strengths of DSM diagnosis is that it enables categorization of
psychological disorders, while one major weakness it posses is that it judges symptoms
according to what is (seemingly) on the surface and ignores other possible important factors.
DSM diagnoses brought about criteria that eliminated wrongful diagnoses since people
who were previously thought to be mad or schizophrenic were able to get the correct diagnosis
and get the appropriate help that they needed.
Some pros related to the most recent DSM classification criteria for clients with
substance use disorders included:
The use of diagnostic criteria that is explicit (Pomerantz, 2014)
Reliability of the criteria among different types of clinics (Pomerantz, 2014)
DSM classification uses professional language that is widely accepted and is common
between researchers and clinicians, aiding communication (Pomerantz, 2014)
