Homeland security department was launched in 2003 to cap the rate of terrorism
activities following the Sep 11, 2001, catastrophic terrorist attacks at the two towers at
the at the United States. It consists of eight main agencies, specialists and advisors.
They all work together towards one vision is to maintain safe and security for the
homeland and prevent any terrorism attack. The main roles of the Department are as
follows;
a) To secure all borders; land, sea and air
b) It also bans formation of terrorist bodies in US and also prevents those bodies
to infiltrate US. Immigration enforcement is another responsibility of
homeland security department, and
c) It maintains the adherence to immigration procedures, and implement
biometric to disallow ant illegal immigrants. The fourth and fifth
responsibility is cyber security and preparedness to disaster and recovery
measures.
The DHS implement a color-coded system as readiness state in case of terrorist’s
threat. It is a five color system, where green means low risk of terrorist attacks, blue is
Secured, yellow indicate a raise of possibility, or momentous risk of a terrorist attack.
Orange means high risk of an attack, while red means severe risk of an attack. The
state of the country today is either orange or red.
It is very complex and not easy job to maintain US protection, and prodigious and
overpowering total of information that to be shared and filtered on a daily basis.
Terrorist’s acts are unpredictable and can be at any time and can be changed to attack
a less protected target randomly. Hence, DHS undertake decisions in prtiroize
different locations for protection.
