Currently I work full time juggling children, work, and home responsibilities. My spouse
and I both are responsible for working and caring for the children. We both work full time hours
though I work longer hours and in many cases work overtime. My spouse works a regular forty
hour job that does not require weekends or any overtime. With three children this balance is
delicate and can be difficult especially with children that are actively involved in sports and other
activities. In order to ensure the children are properly cared for I will work nights and weekends
and my spouse day hours during the week. The goal is to ensure one parent is always available
for the children because family is far more important than career.
While my family enjoys the money received by our hard work, family time is more
important than money and plays a significant role in my life and the life of my family. In
corporate America the sole goal is to make money. The cares and concerns of the family are
rarely acknowledged. The current mindset of corporate America is not conducive to the type of
work and family arrangement that would be most suitable. It is time for corporate America to
adapt to the changing work environment including adopting similar polices as in Sweden and the
extended paternity leave for the mother and offer paternity leave to fathers without equal benefits
there will never be true equality in the corporate setting.
New technology allows for a change in how the corporation operates. People no longer
have to work forty to fifty work weeks in order to be competitive in their field but through the
use of technology can create more flexible work schedules that will be more conducive to
creating a good family life while still being able to be effective in the corporate role. Currently
opposing work schedules make it hard for the entire family to be together but at this time my
