Confidentiality; means a set of rules that limits access on certain type of information.
Privacy; it is the ability of someone secluding information about themselves or someone else.
Discussion
Confidential relationship between a doctor and a patient is key in all medical care processes. A
patient must be assured of confidentiality for him/her to give full required information by the
medical practitioner. Patient information must be protected at all times even if in the event that
the patient has died because it may be a disappointment to the family of the deceased. One of the
doctor’s key responsibilities is to give the patient maximum benefits with the least risk by
correctly diagnosing what the patient might be suffering from, give the patient proper
management of the diagnosed disease and keeping the interests of the patient foremost.
The doctor needs to assure the patient of his confidentiality, he should also tell the patient
openly about cost of treatment including drugs and investigations that are indicated, while doing
so, and he should most importantly consider the availability of resources at the patient’s disposal.
This is what we call clinical and it involves the meeting between two persons which calls for
trust, integrity, competency, compassion and co-operation. The clinical ethics should be well
defined, should give patients preferences, should improve the quality of life and should put into
considerations moral values and social and cultural factors.
When a patient requests a doctor for help; he usually has confidence and trust in the doctor, who
has to respond using medical knowledge, skills and attitudes to the best of his ability to meet the
