Pain Management in Nursing
My concept of interest is pain management. Pain serves as one of the most prominent
indication of any illness or injury, be it physical or mental. Pain does not only help identify any
bodily or psychological damage but also affects one’s thinking process, working memory and
processing speed. Furthermore, chronic pain is also associated with depression, fear and anger.
Pain management is a practice that is widely utilized but still has not been thoroughly
analyzed and defined (Larsen, 2007), leaving room for much more research and thus, my
inclination to analyze it. Through in-depth analyses, I intend to figure out the importance of the
role that pain plays in the recovery of a patient and the affect it has on the patient’s mental and
physical stability. It is important to understand what level of patient recovery can be achieved
through proper pain management and how to make it more affective.
From the nurse’s point of view, pain management has actually become a central part of
their role (Ward, 2012). Pain management by nurses does not only include administering pain
killers but also includes holistic nursing, where the nurses use a different approach to relieve the
patients’ pain, for example by simply providing them with a good listener. This helps the patients
achieve a better mental stability.
Through proper understanding of pain management, nurses are able to better guide their
patients with regard to their pain medication and decision making (Terry, 2004). Pain assessment
is also a vital component of pain management through which a nurse should be able to intervene
in case of high results on the pain scale.
