The great awakening can be defined as the time period in which the great revivation
spread throughout the American colonies. The main agenda for the awakening was to de-
emphasize the importance of church doctrine and instead put a big importance on the individual
and their spiritual life. This awakening arose at the same time as the Enlightenment which purely
emphasized logic, reason and stressed on the power in any individual to understand the universe
based in terms of scientific laws. The importance of this awakening was that the people ought to
purely depend on personal approach of salvation instead of going to church to congregate while
not doing the main agenda for salvation. This great awakening pushed individual religious
experience against the established church doctrine, therefore reducing the importance of the
clergy and also the church in general.
Jonathan Edwards was one of the key revolutionists as far as the great awakening is
concerned. The importance of Jonathan Edwards to the history of America is that he majorly
emphasized on personal religious attributes. He bucked the puritan tradition and called for unity
amongst all Christians as opposed to intolerance. One of his famous sermons delivered in the
year 1741 named “sinners in the hands of an angry God” which explained that salvation was a
direct result from God and could not be attained by human works as puritans preached.
The salutary neglect was an American historic term that referred to an unofficial and
long-term British policy of avoiding strict enforcement of parliamentary laws meant to keep the
American colonies obedient to the nation of England. This term arose as a result of a speech give
in the year1775, by Edmund burke and concerned conciliation with America. The importance of
this term to the history of America is that, it reminds them of the past concerning the
colonization of America by the England and how they tried to force them to remain obedient to
