Define and explain the importance of the following computer security tools / commands /

services:

a) Arp

Address resolution protocol (ARP) is a telecommunication procedure used to change a

network address into a physical address that is acknowledged by the local network.

b) Dnslookup

Dnslookup is the process of looking up an IP address of a domain or host on a certain

network. This helps to determine the destination of the ongoing data.

c) Ipconfig / ifconfig

Ipconfig is an application used to display and control the network settings of a computer.

It displays the current network connection details and DHCP user settings. It displays the full

configuration information and releases the IP address for the particular adapter. The ifconfig is a

system administration utility used in the system startup scripts of operating systems.

d) Metasploit

Metaspoilt is a security project of a computer that offers information about security

problems and helps in IDS signature advancement.

e) Msconfig

Msconfig is a system designed to assist in troubleshooting of a computer. It also ensures

that a computer does not boost slowly and does not crash all the time. It speeds up the Microsoft

startup process of the machine.

f) Msinfo

Msinfo is a file which contains written and understandable view of hardware, system

components and software environments. These files help the users on how to handle the devices

as it gives information about what the PC setup is like.

g) Nbstat

Nbstat is a tool used for problem solving and depends on the Microsoft’s use of NetBIOS

in windows. It is also used to view and control the NetBIOS name table and the name hoard. By

use of Nbstat utility windows it is possible to discover who is logged onto a network PC .It is

also used to capture logon ids.

h) Nessus

Nessus is a tool which is meant to fasten the configuration and installation of servers and

client. It has also improved the navigation of users through the results of a susceptibility audit.

i) Netstat

Netstat is an IP tool that can be used to verify network status and routing tables of

windows. It acts as a performance measurement of network by helping to find the

problems and to determine the amount of traffic on the network.

j) Netuse

Net use is a command that is used to connect to, remove and configure connections to

shared sources such as network printers or drives.

k) Nmap commands

Nmap command is a security tool used for network exploration and security auditing and

scanning. It allows someone to scan large networks to determine which hosts are available and

the services being offered.
