Explain the origins of the war in Southeast Asia. Why did the United States feel the need to get
involved in the conflict? Discuss how the war shifted from advisory in nature to an American

The South Asian conflict was rooted in the actions of the communist undertakings of the
Northern region against the south. The region had been having disputes for years regarding
leadership, with the North tending more to the Russian communism system and the south tending
more to the American democracy. However, the conflict intensified after WW II as the Cold War
continued and there was build-up of tension between the Soviet Union and the US increased.

The roots of the Vietnam war can be traced back to its colonial period when the Japanese forces
invaded the region. On top of that, the region had been occupied by the French and thus eld to
the formation of the Viet Minh by Ho Chi Minh to form the Viet Minh, whose primary aim was
to get the region to independence

. Japan withdrew its forces after the war and this provided an
opportunity for Minh to seize control. To try and regain control, the French supported Ho to
create the State of Vietnam in 1949, with its capital in the city of Saigon.

achieving a unified Vietnam, the actions of these two leaders intensified the conflict and started
what became an all-out war with the North fighting the south with its allies.
There are a number of reasons why the US got involved in the Vietnam war. One is to
facilitate the independence of the region. Before WW 2, Vietnam had been under French rule,
and it was invaded by Japanese forces. This worsened the conditions of the area. After the end of
the war, the Japanese troops withdrew, and a conflict of power rose in the region, with the North
