EDUCATION DEPARTMENT 2
The department of education in the United States is famously referred to as the ED for
Education Department. ED is a Cabinet-level department developed by the federal government
in the United States. It was created through the act of that addressed the organization of the
education President Jimmy Carter. In the year1979, the President of United Sates advocated for
the creation of a department of education, which was to be at cabinet-level. The plan and aim of
Carter were to transfer most of the Department such as in education, Health, and Welfare to a
single unit of ED (Guthrie & James, 2010). He also aimed at transferring the functions related to
the education of the departments of justice, defense, and housing among others. Among the
federal programs related to education to be transferred were such as the Head start. However, the
upgrading of education to a level of the cabinet was opposed by a majority of the Republicans
while supported by the Democrats and liberals. The Republicans argued that the move was
illegal and unconstitutional. They also termed the move as a federal bureaucratic intrusion into
local affairs (United States, 2014).
The act of the Education Department Organization divided the health department,
welfare, and Education, into three department that include the Department of Education and the
health Department and lastly the Department of Human services. The Education Department is
under the administration of the U S Secretary of Education. This department is so far the smallest
of all the departments in the Cabinet rated department in the U S as it contains only 5, 000
employees. As there was no department to deal with matters concerning education, it became a
matter of agency to ensure that the matter was properly taken care of by the government. It was
therefore put in the cabinet under the ministry of interior (Guthrie & James, 2010).
The most important functions offered by the Education Department are that of
establishing policy for administering, coordinating the most crucial assistance required to
education, collecting data on schools, and enforcing the most important educational laws
concerning privacy as well as the civil rights (United States, 2014). Even if it is so, the Education
Department does not establish schools or colleges in any place across the nation. This is made
possible because the Inspector General’s office conducts the necessary audits as well as
investigations that are in connection with the Department’s programs.
Education offered in the U S is highly decentralized which is not the case with other
systems in most of the countries. The federal government in conjunction with the Education
Department is not involved so much in determining the curricula or even the educational
standards as required by the set regulation. The function has been left solely to the state and the
local school districts. Due to this, the quality of the educational institutions as well as their
degrees is maintained through accreditation. This is just an informal process, which is personal,
and the Education Department has no public jurisdiction over it (Guthrie & James, 2010).
The Department’s main function is to promote the student success and that they can
prepare for the global competitiveness. This is achieved by fostering the education excellence as
well as ensuring that equal access exists (Guthrie & James, 2010).
