TIPS: The AGS Case Study Overview
The case study should be written, ideally, using the company that you are working with during
your internships - from start to finish throughout the program. If you want to write your paper
using another organization, you must have worked with the other organization in the specific
phases of study being covered in your Doctoral program.
A. In selecting your research methodology, you may want to find a model to use for writing your
case study so as to validate your presentation as well as your approach to the project. That
means finding another credible paper that was written using a case study approach that you can
use as your guide.... A case study following Dr. Adizes parameters above (using ongoing
internships) is naturally going to be a longitudinal study with multiple intervention
points....but could and perhaps should - also integrate other types of research such as those
described later on in this manual.
B. Even before choosing a method for your case study, you can begin to chunk your paper into
sections, describing
1. a theory or hypothesis, or a thesis statement… a single sentence perhaps, to focus
your work
2. the company background and the problem presented pre-diagnosis,
3. population, what part of the population you will select, how you selected them and
why
4. other possible avenues for intervention (review literature in that context), other
theories being considered,
5. support why choose adizes as your method of intervention as opposed to other
possibilities,
6. discuss bias in adizes and the company that may impact the study, you should
discuss known bias, and also add to this section towards the end of your work as a
retrospective or with regard to recommendations for future research,
7. limitations of the study or its applicability to other companies/venues,
8. areas for improvement in the process of conducting the study,
9. areas recommended for future adizes work in general or with this company,
10. any conclusions and/or recommendations for further study, outcomes…..and
etcetera.
C. You will need to chunk your paper into sections with titles and subtitles in order to format in
APA Style. You will need the most recent APA Manual of Style (see Amazon.com). Do not try
to get by with a crib sheet, as there is significant variety among crib sheets developed for
various classes and purposes online. All major universities will deduct points for errors in style,
even so little as a missing period in the bibliography.

FAQ
(answered by G. David Garson):
What are common standards for case studies based dissertations?
Doctoral programs do not dictate methodology but rather leave issues of
research design and empirical procedure to dissertation committees. For
this reason few programs articulate formal bars to any particular
methodology, case studies included. Although it is true that skepticism
toward the case study method is widespread, prompted by fears of low
quality, the great majority of doctoral programs in public administration
and policy nonetheless allow case studies. Many, however, do so with
guidelines or stipulations. Based on replies to a survey of 35 doctoral
programs in public administration and public policy, a composite set of
guidelines has been constructed below.
Common Guidelines for Case Study Based Dissertations
Case study dissertations should represent original research, be analytic,
well-written, insightful, systematic, explicitly related to the literature of the
field, and should cover their focus in depth. This focus must test
propositions which are relevant to significant theoretical issues.
Theoretical issues may be political-theoretic, decision-theoretic,
economic or market-theoretic, or public policy or action-theoretic, to
name some of the possible dimensions of theory. In this way the criteria
for acceptable case study dissertations do not differ from those for other
types of dissertations.
To test propositions derived from theory, one must have some variance in
the dependent variable(s) under study, which in turn requires there be
some type of comparison such as might be provided by before-after
studies of a policy intervention or by examining a phenomenon in a public
