Persuasive essay 1
For the longest time, marijuana has been banned and illegal in the United States with dates going
back to as early as 1930. However, even with these being the case, it has been realized that it is
among the best cash crops the United States has. Over the years, it has also gained popularity
among the users of the drug and lobby groups that support the legalization of marijuana. This
support has grown due to factors that have shown that prohibition does more harm than good.
The effects of it being illegal has produced higher drug addiction rates and the world's highest
incarceration rate. Therefore, marijuana should be made legal for medical purposes, income to
the government and to reduce prison overcrowding.
The legalization of marijuana would play a big role in boosting the United States economy. This
would be achievable if the marijuana was made legal then taxed. The revenue the government
would realize from the taxation would go a long way in paying up the $16trillion national debt
thus keeping the economy going again. Despite the federal government efforts to control the
marijuana business, it is a key player in the national economy since a lot of people use it or make
profits from engaging in the business. For instance, if marijuana was legal, it would create
employment to the United States citizens at the same time reducing the number of people
incarcerated in prisons and jails. The current prisoners related to marijuana would also be
released.
The statistics on imprisonment show that a good proportion of the criminals are incarcerated due
to drug related crimes. Currently, the scenario is that the U.S has less than 5 percent of the
world’s population but is remarkably known to have a 25 percent of its population incarcerated
largely due to the war on drugs. Sledge, M. (n.d.). Moreover, according to the U.S. Department of
Justice investigations, the results shows that more than half of the federal prisoners are in jail for

drug crimes and especially due to mere possession. This can be attributed to the population
relaxed attitudes toward marijuana use.
The government’s yearly budget allocates an estimate of about $26 billion to the war on drugs.
From these budget, $15 billion is set aside for law enforcement efforts. When the budget
estimates the state and local spend on drug-related arrests and imprisonment are totaled up, the
value is close to a whopping minimum of $51 billion annually. Even with all this investment in
the war on drugs, the effects have been higher drug addiction rates and the world's highest
incarceration rate of 2.2 million Americans in prison or jail. In addition, imprisonment has
disrupted the social norm with parents and children spending part or most of their time in prison.
Marijuana has been identified as the reason for prison overcrowding which is another problem to
the federal government. This can be blamed on the use of misguided drug laws and strict
sentencing. Currently, cannabis is classified as a schedule one drug, to place it in the same level
as heroin, meth, and even more dangerous than cocaine. It is evident that the rates of marijuana
selling and use is comparable across racial and ethnic lines. Although, the outcomes are unequal
with communities of African Americans and Latinos in more risk of being criminalized for drug
law violations than the whites. This is proven by the number of African Americans 40 percent
population yet they comprise 13 percent of the U.S population.
If marijuana was legal, no one would be incarcerated for possession. To start off, prison has
adverse effects on the prisoner’s life with most people confessing it is never the same again after
prison. The system use of elimination, forces the people from prison to go into a life of crime. For
instance, former felons are unable to integrate back into society for reasons set up by legal and
cultural barriers and the constant mark of a criminal record that keeps dragging former felons
down. The punishment for drug use also affects policies dealing with denial of child custody,
