Introduction
Online classes are classes taken by students from any location through the Internet. The
advancement of Information Technology, especially in the education sector has enabled trainers
or teachers increased access to students. Similarly, it has allowed students more access to
education with more flexibility. It is been noted than the number of students enrolling worldwide
to vocational classes, full or part time classes is on the rise, especially among young
professionals. For these individuals, they choose a unique learning experience due to many
diverse reasons. Some of the reasons include lack of enough time to enroll full time to a course
due to pursuant of other life passions, such as careers. Stay at home moms may take up an online
course to keep up-to-date while still fulfilling their motherly duties. International students may
pursue online courses in their dream abroad colleges while they remain at home. Lack of enough
funds may force one to take a free or cheaper online course. Finally, “these programs provide
access to higher education for students who cannot attend traditional courses due to employment,
marital status, family responsibilities, distance, and expenses incurred with traditional education”
(Hannay and Newvine 2). Most Colleges and University have identified an opportunity and have
readily exploited it. They have addressed the learners’ needs by establishing online courses, and
at the end of the courses the students receive a certificates accredited to that institution. It may

seem that online courses are advantageous, however, strong disadvantages emerge on closer
scrutiny.
Discussion
One of the challenges of online classes is that some students may lack key Information
Technology (IT) skills. Most of the online classes and materials are delivered using specialized
systems, platforms or programs. Neil Kokemuller, a college professor, highlights this challenge
in his article when he states that students lacking necessary online or computer skills may suffer
challenges using learning platforms and this may affect their grasp of the academic content
(Kokemuller). Attendance of online classes demands a lot of discipline from an individual
student. This means without force or reminders, he or she must intentionally attend to their
online classes. However, discipline is hard to cultivate; there is lack of a fixed structure, for
example, a class, a teacher and fellow students. The system may cause some undisciplined
students to feel unmotivated, and hence fail to take their online classes seriously enough.
Students doing online classes may find the classes are actually harder and have more workload
than the normal classes. This is an actual fact, because online students are required to do more to
prove they have mastered the course content. Considering they do not have face time with the
teacher, they can only be graded on their numerous assignments and tests. Online classes may
give an opportunity for fraud and cheating. Students may register for a course, but it is not easy
for the Accreditation University to confirm the attendance of the student for the classes, nor
confirm the assignments handed in are actually done by the registered students.
Students who consider online classes miss out on the face-to-face interactions with peers,
school, lecturers or tutors. The interaction with peers is important in the formation of lasting
friendships with people of the same age. It is an opportunity to network with future professionals
