Consumer Health Literacy
Health literacy concerns about how people understand about health and healthcare and
how they apply the information into their lives and their decision making. Health literacy is
very important as it shapes people’s health and their safety as well as quality of healthcare.
Individuals who have lower level of health literacy are always prone to getting poor health
outcomes, increased risk of an adverse events and higher health costs.
Nurses and other stakeholders can work with consumers to ensure that the services they
information and the services they provide to patients are easy to understand and at the same
time are simple to use and act on. The nurses as well can formulate a range of communication
strategies so as to ensure the patients understand the various options that they provide and share
their healthcare decisions. At the same time healthcare nurses can raise awareness and implant
the principle of health literacy in their work (Cline, R. J., & Haynes, K. M. 2001). Nurses can
as well improve the patients’ health literacy by encouraging the patients to speak up, asking
questions and or even asking for help and support if they are provided with the information and
services that they may find hard to understand.
Patients should be very careful when it comes to online health care resource as most of
the information in the internet is unregulated. In evaluating the online health information, the
patients should use MedlinePlus resource as it the most trusted online health information tool
for patients. PatientsLikeMe which is an online community built support information exchange
between patients provides a customized disease specific outcome and visualization tools to
help patients understand and share information about their conditions (Eysenbach, G., & Jadad,
A. R. 2001). This has assisted patients in becoming literate about the health information.
