Immigration and Acculturalation
1. Explain how institutional racism could result in internalized oppression for members of
marginalized populations. Provide examples relevant to a specific minority group, based
on the chapters you selected.
Institutional racism can occur in an institution or between institutions. It is a form
discriminatory treatment, unfair policies and unequal opportunities whose basis is on the
race. This act is usually produced and propagated by institutions like universities,
churches and hospitals. Administrators and staff within these institutions take advantage
of the power which leads to acts in that advantages so groups and disadvantages others,
based on their race (Brown et al 2015).
Institutional racism can lead to internalized oppression. This oppression can begin most
often starts from outside through acts of discriminatory acts. These acts can range from
physical violence prompted someone’s race to exclusion, to even name-calling that are
racially based like ‘Monkeys’ as they refer to Africans.
The victims of the institutional racialism get oppressed through the physical pain and the
psychological torture that they are subjected to. AS time goes, they get to internalize
these bad treatment feelings and experience and the act on negative perceptions about
themselves and other members of their own group.
Those who have internalized racism, it results to them finding fault and criticizing each
other. The result will be being divided and not united which will lead to despair (Brown
et al 2015).
Example: Police officers in the USA used to treat African-American with racial biasness;
this is an act of institutional racism, representing a law enforcement institution.
