Running head; ETHICAL DECISION MAKING 2
Unethical Professionalism
In this case study, the counselor displayed some good ethical standards in the beginning
of his counseling sessions with Jill. However towards the end of his sessions he displayed
weaknesses that led to unethical and unprofessional behavior. The counselor is very much
knowledgeable on the ethical standards that he is required to adhere to as a professional. This is
displayed when he easily recognizes the ethical implications that could follow his actions, so he
tries to avoid these actions. One of his actions that can be considered ethical is when he refers his
client to another counselor, since he feels his relationship with Jill would be unethical if he
continues with the sessions. He also persistently tries to stop his client from discussing family
issues, and cultural differences since due to his geographical position he is not allowed to discuss
such issues.
Though, he later behaves in an unethical manner when he agrees to meet Jill to discuss
her referral after she contracted her services again. They later engage in a sexual relationship and
not a client professional relationship. This behavior is unethical with in all aspect. Another
unethical behavior is when he knowingly gives his clients confidential information to her boss.
No other person should know what transpires in counseling sessions, but on the contrary, Joe
discloses to Jill’s former boss that he used to offer counseling services to Jill who was suffering
from depression and anxiety. He revealed the nature of his client’s problems to her boss, this is
unethical.
In summary, there are two unethical behaviors exhibited by the counselor in this case
study. The first one being, getting sexually involved with his client and secondly disclosing his
client’s confidential counseling information to her boss.
Violation of ACA codes of ethics
