Combined incidence rate
The incidence rate refers to the rate of new cases of a disease that are observed within a
defined period. Incidence rates are calculated as follows:
Incidence rate = Number of new cases of disease or injury during specified period / Time each
person was observed, totaled for all persons.
Using the above method to compute the combined incidence rate of Musculoskeletal Disorders
(MSDs) and Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTDs) at Acme Industries:
In the year under review, a total of 50 cases were observed for MSD and CTD at Acme
Industries.
This means that for 450 full-time workers, there were 50 cases of CTDs and MSDs. Therefore,
the combined incidence rate for every 100 full-time workers within the year could be estimated
as follows.
= (100 x 50)/450
=11.11 cases
The combined incidence rate of CTD and MSDs was 11.11/100 workers per year. To
determine whether this rate should worry Acme Industries we compare the organizational rate to
the industry average which is the most representative yardstick for comparison. Accordingly,
data shows that the industry average of 1.5/100 full-time workers. This figure is much less than
Acme Industries’ 11.11 combined incidence rate.
