Maslow’s hierarchy states that there are five levels of human satisfaction called as
hierarchy of prepotency. The five stages are physiological needs, safety needs, social
needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. Alderfer’s ERG theory categorized
needs into three classes they are Existence needs, relatedness needs and growth needs.
Similarities between these two theories are both use hierarchical scale, follows
Herzberg’s ideas, their basic criteria is to motive people, they follows needs theory
perfectly, and both are influenced by environmental conditions that increases
employee performance.
Differences between these two theories are Maslow’s hierarchy has 5 stages whereas
ERG theory has 3 stages. Existence needs is need of basic necessities that is
combination of physiological needs and safety needs. Relatedness needs is
interpersonal relations, fame, etc. which is combination of social needs and esteem
needs. Last stage Growth needs is self-development stage which is same as Self-
actualization needs.
According to ERG theory at a time two needs can be addressed whereas in Maslow’s
theory only one need is addressed at a given time.
According to ERG theory if higher level needs are not achieved then the lower level
needs are intensified called as frustration-regression aspect of ERG theory whereas in
Maslow’s theory the higher level is reached only when the lower level is fulfilled.
Maslow’s theory is a hierarchical ordered that cannot be changed next level is reached
only when the before level is achieved. ERG is more flexible where fulfilling needs is
important but not the order of hierarchy.
Alderfer’s ERG theory is important for understanding individual behaviour. The
needs are categorized as need for achievement, need for affiliation, need for power.
In my opinion every individual will be motivated byMaslow’s hierarchyof needs, for
example a young graduate from university would be aiming for a job in good
company, fulfil basic needs, and fulfil security and so on. In case if the individual is
unable to achieve higher level of needs, ERG theory will come into existence in
which the lower level needs intensifies.
