Module 6 Short Responses Question 1
Which source will you analyze using active reading strategies? Include the name of the
article, the author, the publication, the date, and where you found it.
Read your chosen source using the active reading strategies you learned on the previous page.
Then, summarize the overall meaning and content of the reading. Write your summary below.
Your summary should be at least one paragraph long.
The source I will analyze with an active reading strategy will be "When America Despised
the Irish: The 19th Century'??s Refugee Crisis", by Christopher Klein, originally published
March 16, 2017, last updated March 14, 2019, found
on https://www.history.com/news/when-america-despised-the-irish-the-19th-centurys-
refugee-crisis. The author's main argument is more of a timeline to inform the major events of
that exodus of the Irish to America. Throughout the article, the author relays where his
information came from for example, "The Irish consumed 7 million tons of potatoes each
year. They ate potatoes for dinner. They ate them for lunch. They even ate them for breakfast.
According to “Irish Famine Facts” by John Keating". You can also find artwork or cartoons
from that time period the depict events from that time. I would agree with the message the
author is conveying due to my research on the subject I find similar facts from other primary
sources like written letters of that time frame that cross-check with this article really well.
Module 6 Short Responses Question 2
What events or historical forces contributed to the Boston busing crisis of the mid-1970s?
Name at least three, and briefly explain why you think each one was a contributory cause of
the Boston busing crisis.
Three of the historical forces that contributed to the Boston busing crisis of the mid-1970s
was first, Brown v Board of Education in 1954. In which a ruling was set in place that labeled
the segregation of public schools as unconstitutional. This was directly tied to the de facto
segregation problem that plagued the nation's public school system. Next, was the passing of
the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Alongside other rulings from the Supreme Court jumpstarted
and put in gear the motion to desegregate our county that wasn't welcomed very well by some
of the nation's people. There was still much racial unbalanced in our nation despite the
rulings. Lastly, was when the Massachusetts state legislature passed the Racial Imbalance Act
of 1965. This new law mandated that the schools in Massachusetts that were segregated to
integrate with others, forcing them to open their doors to both white and African American
students. Repercussions for schools not abiding by this new law were to be cut off state
funding.
Module 6 Short Responses Question 3 Name three specific consequences of the Boston
busing crisis.
