BALANCING CAREER AND FAMILY LIFE 2
Balancing Career and Family Life
Work-life balance is the concept of appropriate prioritization of one’s work (ambition,
career) and one’s lifestyle (family, leisure, health, spiritual development, pleasure).
Question 1: If you have, or plan to have, children, what sort of balance do you seek between
career and family life? Do you believe that the mindset of corporate America is conducive to the
type of work and family arrangement that would suit you?
Career and family life should have some sort of balance. I seek a work life balance where
I am living a successful and happy life as opposed to merely achieving success at work (Hornby
and Bleed, 2006). The mind-set of corporate America is ever changing, but from around 2006, it
was seen from studies conducted that men and women who put placed the same level of
precedence on work and family life, also known as dual-centric people had advanced more in
their careers than those who were family-centric or work-centric. It was also seen that the family-
centric as well as the dual-centric individuals showed greater satisfaction than those individuals
who were work-centric (Hornby and Bleed, 2006).
Achieving balance between work and life minimizes stress. This balance is easy to
achieve especially when your work helps one achieve the family’s goals and conversely, family
activities help you achieve success in your work. The essence of work life balance should be
what you take from your work helps you in your family while what you take from your family
relationships helps your work (Lawler and Hankins).
In support of Deidre English and Barbara Ehrenreich, for the workers or employees to
achieve a satisfactory life, the corporate world needs to achieve a human pace of doing things
