“O2” resumed its operations after 2 months. The shut down was not voluntarily but forced
in nature given the prevailing social and communal tensions in city of Jammu that virtually
crippled the whole city during the period. The excitement of reopening overshadowed the
multitude of problems faced by O2, the problems of sustenance of business operations.
Making profits for an FMCG Retail(Supermarket) with single store operations for O2 was
always going to be challenging. The key to survival was expanding geographical reach as
well as addressing related segments. In fact expansion was on the cards when political
situation suddenly deteriorated to the level where business was not possible.
All operations were shut down completely for two months and burnt of no earnings could
be read on current bank statement that shows no corpus and Mr. Rajat Bhatia, one of
promoters, doesn’t help biting his tongue thinking about impending expenses including 3
months due rent , employee salaries etc. For a small business these were huge expenses
and product assortment that includes branded grocery, cosmetics and household utility
items having low margin ensures that any hopes of brisk sales would not cover for
expenses. Bhatia, normally very energetic and thoughtful, feeling bit low and bewildered
in to thoughts of his yesteryears and was visibly irritated with constant ringing of mobile.
“Who’s this? “Pranav”.
Pranav is second business partner and had called from Chennai. Greetings were exchanged
and Bhatia updated him with current financial as well as political situations. Pranav, being
a go-getter immediately decides to come back. “BTW Rajat , Can you call Mr. Khurana
and update him too . Maybe we all can meet on Monday and discuss the gravity of situation.
Take care. Bye “. Pranav hung the phone and Bhatia rushed to Traders meeting to discuss
demands for compensation from Govt., though in his heart he knew that it was going to be
futile exercise.
Resumption of operations coincides with first anniversary of O2 and meeting was called
for taking stock of the situation to be held on Monday, when all three partners/promoters
would decide on future course of action.
It was lazy Sunday evening and Bhatia sitting in his office desk was having tea when it
occurs to him that It’s been exactly one year and 5 months since he returned to India. He
was heading the country operations for Middle East for a pharmaceutical giant. His rise to
the position was phenomenal. Within 8 years after joining as management trainee he moved
among the ranks and the youngest to held the position in the company. He was nicknamed
as “Marketing wizkid” within the circles. Circa 2006 he was at peak of his career when he
was invited to take part in International Pharmaceutical Association meet(IPAM)to be
held in Mumbai. He was very excited. It was his turn to interact with who’s who of the
industry and who knows he might be spotted to get another great opportunity. But his
excitement was for entirely different reason. He would get a chance to meet his childhood
friend Pranav after 5 years. Pranav had got married recently. Bhatia couldn’t attend his
marriage due to work arrangements and the thought of meeting his childhood friend gives
him Goosebumps. Pranav was working as Operations consultant with software major and
has been living out of suitcase for some time.
