ETHICAL DRIFT 2
Ethical Drift in Nursing
ORIGINAL POST
Ethical drift is as the gradual decline of working standards and guidelines which happens
to a person, a group, or the entire organization. The drift is usually caused by environmental
pressure and often occurs perfidiously or without ones being consciously aware. The ethical drift
is also known as ethical dilemmas in nursing. These drifts range from speaking up about how a
particular shortage in staffing may affect the nurses quality care delivery, the manner of
allocating the most sensitive and scare resource in healthcare like blood or organ donation and
distribution, end of life decisions to birth complications. Every nurse has their kind of ethics,
which highly depend on their upbringing, culture, race, religion, or personal history. However,
according to Martha Turner of the American Nursing Association, the unifying aspects are either
the nurse is not sure about what is the right thing to do or that they see what need to be done but
cannot do it due to the present circumstance.
A year ago, a 12-year boy was brought in the emergency room following a fatal accident
and was placed in the ICU after he was ruled to be in a coma. After one month, no change was
perceived, and the boy still laid helplessly in the life-supporting machine. The chief hospital
director approached the family, and he explained the consequences which would befall the boy
either he loses his life or even if he were to recover he would remain disabled due to the damage
the accident had caused and would entirely depend on assistance in everything. The chief
director advised the mother to consider doing well and saving the life of the boy by donating his
organs and help save another life elsewhere. By the time this discussion was going on between
the director and the mother, the boy's father had left a few minutes meaning he was not informed.
