Imagine being in a class where the instructor is focused on arranging all the writing
materials on their desk even during the lesson and stresses on the importance of looking up at
him at all times. It would seem odd to some students but not everyone would notice such
behaviors unless they are very observant. If you were to sit back and observe the instructor some
more, it would be possible to note that the instructor tends to focus on having all the teaching
materials and cannot focus unless everything is in order in the class. Such behaviors can be
understood as traits of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCPD). The essay below will explore the
obsessive compulsive personality disorder with the aim of understanding the symptoms of the
disorder, possible causes, the example of comorbidities related to OCPD, the prognosis and
treatment approaches available.
Symptoms
When working with patients seeking mental health services, the health professionals refer
to the clinical diagnostic manuals to gain a better understanding of the illness and the potential
treatment interventions. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-5
provides an understanding of obsessive compulsive personality disorders. According to the DSM
5 the main features of this mental illness include impairment in personality functioning and the
existence of pathological personality characteristics (Liggett, Sellbom and Carmichael (2017).
According to Liggett et al. (2017) patients with obsessive compulsive personality disorder may
witness a reduction in the symptoms over a year but the symptoms tend to persist in the long
term. The person with OCPD as identified by Mancebo, Eisen, Grant and Rasmussen (2005) is
often preoccupied with achieving perfection in all activities or in certain areas even when it is at
