Fauvism (1905 - 1908)
Fauvism was an artistic style that was developed in France in 1905. It was inspired by the
examples of Paul Cezanne, Georges Seurat, Vincent Van Gogh, and Paul Gauguin. Fauves,
meaning wild beasts, represented a group of French painters who were loosely allied having
shared interests. These artists include Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet, and Georges Rouault.
These artists were being inspired by older artists, more so Gustave Moreau. Matisse was the
leader of the group and emphasized the use of intense colors to describe aspects such as light and
space, therefore, redefining pure color and its application to communicate the artist’s emotional
state (Cohen, 2017). Fauvism contributed significantly to modern art allowing colors to be used
as an independent element on the canvas instead of just serving the description and
representational purposes. Fauvism added value to individual expression, that is, allowing artists
to express their experience, emotional state towards nature and their intuition. The Fauves added
strength and unity to the visual impression of the work of art. The name, Fauvism, was acquired
during the review of Salon d’ Automne art in Paris in 1905 when Louis Vauxcelles described the
brushwork of Matisse and other artists having “orgy of colors.” As a result, the name “Fauve”
became the badge of these artists (Cohen, 2017).
Cubism (1907 - 1914)
Cubism is an art movement that came into existence in 1907 led by Pablo Picasso and
Georges Braque. Cubism was based on the idea of deconstructing a specific concept to allow it
be viewed from different angles simultaneously. The Picasso’s painting, Demoiselles
D’Avignon, became the first painting to incorporate the cubist style, that is, making paintings
