Analysis of two concerts
The "Jumpin' at the Woodside" written by Count Basie in 1938 is an exceptional piece of
music. The instruments played in the composition include: trumpets, saxophones, guitar, drums,
piano, trombones, and bass. I enjoyed listening to the performance and found it to be very touchy
especially the chorus that was played with the saxophones whereas the muted trumpets played
the stabbing chord interjections. The composition has an AABA 32-bar form that is clear and
constitutes of balanced sections. One of the features of Basie's music that I learned so far is that
they mainly riffs at base and this composition isn’t an exception. The A section of the tune is a
simple riff repetition while much of the improvisation occurs in Section B. however, the soloist
start to improvise after some few choruses throughout the whole 32 bars. The band performs
when standing with a notable balance in the instruments. The song has a fast swing melodic
structure that is repeated 8 times. This texture constitutes of bass, kit, and melodic line that have
been subtly combined in a layered way. There is also a three-fold structure in the tune.
Take the A Train produced in 1941 by Duke Ellington and his orchestra is another
outstanding piece of music that I enjoyed listening to. The instruments used in the performance
include saxophones, trumpets, piano, trombones, guitar, drums, and bass. The band performs
when seated except the bass player who remains standing throughout the entire performance. The
