Call-For-Papers: Analysis
Call for Papers (CFPs) are announcements made by conferences, journals or other
publishers in order to attract the written contributions of subject matter experts. CFPs are basically
open invitations for subject matter experts to send in their work, proposed or finished, so long as
it is related to the scope of the publication and within the established boundaries of the themes.
CFPs are very important for academic life, as they allow professionals the opportunity to further
spread their work. Furthermore, they allow for the gathering of new data; in the case of conferences,
they also create a space where these papers can be taken in and put through a special form of peer-
review and discussion that further contributes to the growth of knowledge. In the end, the purpose
of CFPs is, in its broadest possible form, to contribute to the aggregation of knowledge in a
particular field, by pooling in the knowledge that different individuals have accumulated. To fulfill
this goal, it is imperative that the CFP is exact and clear in its communication, so as to ensure that
the right type of applicant responds to the call.
When examined individually, CFPs will contain the basic information about the
Conference or publication. It answers questions like: What is the subject to be explored? What are
its themes? Who is involved in this CFP? What are the requirements for participation? What are
the length, content and format requirement for submissions? What are the deadlines? Collectively,
they can be said to contain only the most vital information to acquire the interest of possible
participants and to establish a clear selection of themes and guidelines. These themes and

guidelines will differ based on each publication or conference. Broadly, though, it could be said
that, when these matters are explained, the language that is used will be as broad as possible.
Themes and questions are presented in a way that is as open as possible the word “technology”
will be used a lot, for example, but details about what specific gadget is being referred to will
rarely be mentioned.
When examining the CFPs of various
conferences and publications, I was unable to
find a specific overlap in content, except in
conferences or publications that had similar
scopes and purposes. For instances, in two
specialized conferences that seek to explore
the role of technology on society, similar
themes are covered. However, between different fields, drastically different matters will be
covered. Likewise, the scope and themes covered might even change depending on the institution
that is affiliated to the CFP. When Universities are associated with a conference, for example, the
requirements for submission become stricter, but the subject matter broadened. When offered by
private institutions, they can have slightly more lax requirements. Though, if it was necessary to
generalize, it could be said that all are brought together by the search for papers that will increase
the existing knowledge of the field innovation, creativity and uniqueness are expected from all
participants.
Considering the scope and theme of my own paper the role of social media on the
handling of a modern business I was not able to find nearly as many CFPs that were applicable
for my subject matter. Most of the calls that I found were either geared towards science and
