The data warehouse at Huffman Trucking is comprised of critical systems such as
databases, networks, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation, and communication
that are used to support their day-to-day operations. Huffman Trucking outsources 100% of its
information systems operations. To track clients and sales, the company stores information in a
small database that holds personal information such as individual marital status, former college
information, and favorite restaurants. The database also stores information related to company
decision makers, account and order information. Driver logs and truck maintenance records are
also stored in the databases (Apollo Group Inc., 2013a). However, Huffman Trucking’s service
request log indicates a need for improvements.
Current Use of Hardware and Software for Supporting Knowledge Workers
Huffman Trucking Company currently uses an outside consulting firm, Smith Systems
consulting, for all IS needs including finance, human resources (HR), marketing and sales and
supply chain. Knowledge workers use information from the databases in each of these
respective departments to increase their decision support capabilities within the organization.
Recently, Huffman Trucking decided to implement an ERP system to help the company keep up
with organizational growth. The new ERP will facilitate full integration of Huffman Trucking
processes and will incorporate all major business components. Some of the major business
components include connection to customer sales orders, improving services to customers,
tracking service and deliveries, HR needs, scheduling, general ledger, accounts payable, accounts
receivable, and preventative maintenance and overhaul requirements for equipment. The new
ERP will require new hardware such as various types of computers (hand-held, PCs, desktops),
databases to hold new information, and new communication devices to deliver quick access to
information. The ERP will be also be able to use business intelligence to produce patterns,
