SEMANTIC FEATURES IN HINDI 2
Semantic Features in Hindi
Semantics refers to the study of linguistic expressions in order to determine their
meaning. Thomason (1996) asserts that when studying semantics, linguistics seek to identify
general rules which enable them to determine the relationships that exist between the forms.
They do this by looking at how words are arranged in a sentence and at their meanings; this can
be quite complex and challenging.
Semantic features on the other hand are used to express meaning. For example the word
castle denotes certain meaning concerning the building when contrasted to the word house. As
part of semantics there are various lexical relations which can be identified. This simply refers to
the relationships that are found between words and their meaning. Examples include Polysemy
where one word contains multiple meanings, Homophony where words have the same
pronunciation but are different in their spelling and meaning, metaphor where words are used to
replace others based on their similar attributes and so forth.
Like many other languages the Hindi language has various semantic features and lexical
relations in terms of polysemy, homophones, and metaphors. Polysemy in the language causes
disambiguities when seeking to undertake translation for example कबूतर which has been
translated to doves and at another point as pigeons (Mall and Jaiswal, 2017). Given the multiple
meaning of the word, it is possible for disambiguities to arise when trying to determine the
particular meaning. Mahato and Thomas (2017) however assert that through semantic analysis
the intended meaning of the word can be determined based on the word level and the particular
context. Polysemy in the Hindi language just like in English can be demystified by analyzing the
context of the word and its usage since the context determines the meaning. It also allows an
individual to determine how various textual elements and sentences fit together
