AMERICAN VALUES 2
Written Assignment - American Values
American society consists of people from diverse backgrounds. However, this diversity
does not limit the ability of the American people to feel united by a set of values and beliefs that
cater to the entire multicultural country of the United States. Over the years, historians
documented several values that are typically American. Firstly, individualism is at the core of the
American dream. Every person in American believes that they can make decisions without
depending upon anyone else. Additionally, cultures are individualistic, and they consider that
each of them has a moral significance. It is worth noting that, in light of this, every member of
society gets credit or blame for their actions (Weil, 2017).
Individualism is essential to Americans because it allows them the freedom to be
themselves. Most countries admire this value as it leads to less discrimination. It is also
complementary to freedom since most people are skeptical of government and corporate giants
meddling with their day to day affairs. They interconnect to ensure Americans enjoy the right to
choose where to live, who to marry, and, the careers to pursue. America is mostly individualistic
because the founders of the nation wanted a country where people had the freedom to worship or
interact with colleagues from all walks of life.
Another value commonly accepted the United States is the idea of self-government.
Here, all citizens above 18 years have the right to participate in elections and determine how the
government runs the country. The power lies with the people, and this ensures that all individuals
can express themselves and expect protection by the law of the land. Equality is also another
value that marries with this idea, where all individuals enjoy the same right-one vote. The
American dream centers upon the concept of equality, and that no one is superior to the other
