COUNSELING SKILLS 2
.
DQ#1. How are you feeling about your skills as a counselor? Is there a particular area of
concern?
My response:
Since I started my practice as a counselor, I have gained essential skills needed to provide
the assessment, counseling, and diagnosis to the people who are facing psychological problems
among other life stresses. My main strength is that I enjoy my work and find happiness in
helping people to deal with their problems. The ability to communicate with clients in a natural
manner is a skill that I am happy to possess. According to Furr & Barret (2000), counselors
should have an innate ability to communicate and explain their thoughts and ideas to the clients
without any struggles. The ability to begin at the position of the client without being judgmental
while accepting their position is a skill that I have learned during practice. I have realized over
the period of my practice that professional counselors should have the ability to start at the
position of the client and take baby steps together. This skill has enabled me to relate with my
clients in an open, and non-judgmental manner by accepting them as they are while conveying
acceptance with understanding and warmth.
Empathy and having the ability to understand my client’s pain has enabled me to show
compassion and to show them that they are in the right hands. I have come to understand that
most of my clients come to seek solutions to their problems which have enabled me to develop
problem solving skills as well as the ability to build rapport. Going forward, I would like to work
on acquiring multicultural competency skills to enable me to deal with people of different
ethnicity, religion, and race without biasness or discrimination.
