THE ROLE OF VALUES AND ETHICS AT WORK 2
Chapter 7: The Role of Values and Ethics at Work
The conventional trend in employment implies that men tend to earn significantly higher
salaries than women performing the same job. However, this is not the case for those at the
beginning of their career. According to the article, the gaps between the wages men receive
against those paid to their female counterparts increasingly vary as the men use higher the ranks.
The article presents another side of the gender remuneration gap “misbegotten myth”.
The article also emphasizes the fact that the wage gap cannot be exclusively determined
by detached factors such as education, responsibilities and experience. The organizations’ ethical
structure and value systems greatly influence the wage structure and attitudes. The values and
ethics of a company are seen to shape tolerance or discrimination of women when it comes to
wage allocation.
The article that is being reviewed relates to the roles that values play in the determination
of wages across gender within organizations. The same content is discussed in chapter seven of
the course. In chapter seven, the values in the American workplace are said to be honesty,
respect, service, excellence and integrity. While the article attempts to discount the wage gap
“misbegotten myth”, the chapter insists on using evidence rather than beliefs to determine truths
behind behavior. The chapter also insists on satisfying all constituents without discriminating any
on the basis of gender, race or religion.
When the values and ethics of the workplace are adhered to by the management, the gap
in wages is likely to disappear. This is because all members will be equally respected for their
honest service without putting emphasis on their gender. Pragmatism is equally important in
using factual evidence rather than myths to determine issues as important as gender and wages.
