MACRO CAREER PATH FOR SOCIAL WORKERS
Macro Career Path for Social Workers
Summary of The Main Points
The article titled Going macro: exploring the careers of macro practitioners” has
addressed the issue of training and the involvement of social workers in the macro career paths
such as leadership and policy making. According to Pritzker & Applewhite (2015), the
professional social workers and their clients stand to benefit more when social workers are engaged
in the leadership of social work organizations, in policy-making positions or any other influential
position in the society. For example, when social workers occupy a policy-making position, they
contribute both their expert knowledge and their ability to contextualize policies in the local
contexts, thus making better policies that benefit the community members who are their clients.
The main challenge remains the fact that there is less involvement of social workers in macro
career positions because students in the schools of social work shy away from the macro career
paths (Pritzker & Applewhite, 2015).
The article has also revealed that social workers with macro career skills can compete
favourably for leadership positions in social work organizations (Pritzker & Applewhite, 2015).
Even though members of the professions are hired in the leadership position of social work
organizations, the social workers with macro career skills can compete for the position favourably.
Other positions of influence forming part of macro career paths include consultants, managers,
research coordinators, community outreach liaison and public affairs field specialist (Pritzker &
Applewhite, 2015).
