CONCEPTS OF BIOLOGY 2
Statement 1: By increasing the amount of sun exposure the growth of a tomato plant will
increase.
The above statement is a hypothesis. The suggested explanation behind the increased growth of a
tomato plant is an increased amount of exposure to sunlight. This observation can be tested by
reducing the amount of sunlight that the plant is exposed to and observing the effect on the
growth of the plant. Therefore, the suggested explanation can be tested. The hypothesis is also
falsifiable because it can easily be disproven by experimental results (p. 20).
Statement 2: Energy cannot be created or destroyed
The above statement is a natural law. The account describes how energy, an element in nature,
behaves under certain conditions (p.18). It is based on repeated experimental evidence and
represents some aspect of energy.
Statement 3: When newly industrialized parts of Britain became polluted in the nineteenth
century, smoke killed lichens growing on trees and blackened their bark. Pale colored
moths which had been well camouflaged before when they rested on tree trunks became
very conspicuous and were easily found and eaten by birds. Rare dark moths, which had
been conspicuous before, were now well camouflaged in the black background. Birds
switched from eating mainly dark moths to pale moths. Over time, the most common moth
color changed from pale to dark. Natural selection had caused a change in the British moth
population.
The above statement is a theory. Only the moths which were best adapted to the new
environment survived, and thus were able to transmit their genetics to the succeeding
