INTRODUCTION TO CRIMINOLOGY 2
Introduction to Criminology
Criminology is used to refer to the study of criminal and crimes. Criminals such as serial
killers are people who have committed crime. Typically, the term serial killer is used on
murderers responsible for killing at least three people. One of the most renown serial Killer in
American history is Richard Kuklinski.
The serial killer Richard Kuklinski took credit for murdering more than 200 people when
working for the various mafia families. Richard Kuklinski, the American serial killer, was
branded the Iceman because he was a cold-blooded murderer who used poison, guns, needles,
and knives to kill his victims. In addition to this, he is accused of deadly cyanide to kill his
victims. He would freeze his victims in his garage and dump them later in the river.
On theories of crime, the best theory that explains why crime occurs is the psychological
theory which focuses on how the difference in feelings and thoughts leads different people to
display criminal behavior. According to this theory, crime is considered to be a mood disorder. A
criminal tends to show the manifestation of mood disorder through their short temper,
depression, rage, social isolation, and narcissism. The psychological theory, therefore, explains
criminal behavior as a result of individual factors such as inadequate socialization, negative
experiences at early childhood, such as being raised by an abusive parent. The individual factors
lead one to have criminal thinking patterns.
Even though there is no direct link between mental illness and crime, the majority of the
prison population have at one time suffered mental illness.
