ADVOCACY COMPETENCIES FOR HUMAN SERVICE PROFESSIONALS
Advocacy Competencies for Human Service Professionals
Summary of The Article
https://www.nationalhumanservices.org/assets/Journal/journal-of-human-services_fall-2013.pdf
The points made in the article are that advocacy is an important part of human service
workers' job, that the majority of service workers do not embrace advocacy as part of their job,
and that there exists innovative methods for incorporating advocacy in the human service
profession. Besides offering direct services to clients, human service professionals usually find
themselves advocating for the interest of their clients, knowingly or unknowingly (Snow, 2013).
For example, a youth worker may find himself pleading with a judge to issue a lenient judgment
in a case where a juvenile has been sued. A human service worker may also advocate for a poor
student to be granted a student loan. Advocacy helps to overcome inequalities and barriers that
prevent disenfranchised clients from achieving their goals (Snow, 2013). However, many human
service professionals have not recognized advocacy as an integral part of their work, besides
offering direct services to clients (snow, 2013). This denial of advocacy results in fewer human
service workers endeavoring to improve their competencies in advocacy.
Human service professionals can incorporate advocacy as part of their work by recognizing
and embracing cultural diversity. As noted by Snow (2013) embracing cultural diversity enables a
human service professional to understand the factors that may hinder a client from achieving his
or her goals, hence the professional can advocate for the interests of the client better. The other
method of incorporating advocacy into human service work is infusing social justice into the
profession (Snow, 2013). The human service worker then acts as an activist thereby advocating
for social justice on behalf of the disadvantaged client.
