THE IRISH IMMIGRATION 2
Introduction
The Irish Immigration is a significant occurrence in American history owing to the
numerous numbers of Irish immigrants that fled from their country due to famine. The
immigration occurred between 1846 and 1855, with approximately 1.5 million immigrants
fleeing from Ireland to the United States (Achouri, 2016). This accounted for almost half of
the total population of immigrants that moved to the United States of America. One
significant characteristic of this group of immigrants is that they were uneducated, unskilled.
They had been living in adverse poverty as portrayed in their lack of money and clothes.
These factors made their adaptation and assimilation into the American culture difficult and
prolonged. Based on this background, I will outline research questions on the Irish
Immigrant experience through the lenses of political and economic history.
The research question that addresses the Irish immigrant experience through the lens
of political history
The Irish Immigrants faced negative stereotypes created by the native-born
Americans that made their lives miserable. The prevalent history of English domination in
Ireland created a notion that the immigrants were inferior in intellect and any other
capabilities. Despite this stereotyping, the immigrants became deeply engaged in the politics
of their new home. They voted in high proportions as compared to other immigrant groups
and actively took place in the American civil war of the 1860s.
Research questions:
1. In what ways did in the involvement of the Irish in the civil war help in proving their
loyalty to their new home?
