MAT 510 Homework Assignment
1. Is Sara’s conclusion a logical conclusion?
Sara’s conclusion is not logical. This is because her sample size is small thus increasing
her margin of error. She therefore needs to increase her sample size to at least 100 voters for a
more logical conclusion. Additionally, Sara could poll people randomly rather than only using
her friends. Expanding the sample size would increase her chances of getting voters with
different political views. Even more, this would increase the chances of a more accurate
representation of the people who would turn out to vote for Jones and Johns. Therefore, Sara’s
conclusion is not logical as she is biased in her sampling and she has also used a small sample
size.
2. Friends Samples
Ideally, Sara’s sample size should be more than 100 friends. One makes an educated
guess about what the larger population thinks when conducting a survey or a poll. Based on
sample mean, the sample size of Sara’s friends can be calculated. The first step in deriving is to
determine an acceptable standard error of the attribute mean estimation, which is denoted as E.
For this case, we can assume that the acceptable standard error is 0.5 years when estimating the
mean age of the sample population. The next step would be to access the standard deviation of
the age in the population, which is denoted as σ. An assumption that we make here is that the
standard deviation of the age in the population is 3 years. At 95% confidence interval, the Z
score is 1.96. The fourth step would be to compute the appropriate sample size based on the
formula:
n=σ
