Author: Andrew Karmen
&
Serial Murderers and Their Victims
Author: Eric Hickey

1. Differentiate between mass, spree, and serial murderers.
Mass Murderers:
Mass murder defined: “When several victims are killed within a few moments or hours.”
(Hickey, 2010, p. 9)
Institutional mass murder: ordered by dictators or ethnic cleansing groups of people as
seen in Europe and Africa.
- Mini mass murder results in very victims than a mass murder but still conducted in
the same manner
Mass Murder Classifications and Psychological Characteristic’s:
(Hickey, 2010, pp. 12-13)
Family Slayer/ Annihilator: Kills family and then commits suicide
Murderer for Profit: Kills to profit materially
Murderer for Sex: Rare typology but will sexually torture, rape, and murder victims
Pseudo-Commando: Obsessed with guns and a fantasy for murder
Set-and-Run Killer: Plans an escape route following killing aftermath (may use
poison or set fires)
Psychotic Killer: person with acute or chronic psychosis who is legally insane

each other
Offenders are typically white, male, and wide age ranges.
*Mass murderers give little care or thought to their capture or death.
Differences of mass murderers:
Killers are apprehended or killed by police, commit suicide, or turn themselves in
Mass murderers typically make “final statements” instead of torturing individualized victims
(Hickey, 2010, p. 20)

Spree Murderers:
Spree Murder defined: “three or more victims killed by a single person within a period of hours

- Often act in a frenzy, make little effort to avoid detection, and kill in several
sequences.
- There appears to be no cooling off period even though the murders occur at different
places.
- Spree murders are also sometimes called “cluster killings”
Note: Famous designer Gianni Versace was killed as a result of a spree killing in Florida by 27
year old Andrew Cunanan.

Serial Murderers:
Serial Killer defined: A serial killer is traditionally defined as an individual who has killed three
or more people over a period of more than a month, with down time (a "cooling off period")
between the murders, and whose motivation for killing is usually based on psychological
gratification.” (Wikipedia , 2013)
- “Primary confounding myths of serial murderers is that they are all sexual.” (Hickey,
2010, p. 1)
- Serial murderers are “perhaps a product of the Vietnam War or moral decay of our society.”
(Hickey, 2010, p. 2)
- *Give a lot of thought to capture and death
Additional Notes:
Facts about serial killers:
1 in 5 is black
Nearly %16 are female
%2-%4 are legally insane
Several cases do not involve sexual assaults, torture, or sexual mutilations
1 in 4 have partners in murder
Some victims are poisoned or shot
Most offenders remain in the local area

Kimberly Reynolds) is a resident of Fresno, California.
The majority of murders are a result of domestic violence and community conflicts (1/3 of
all murders are by strangers) 2004 brought increased stranger murders (Hickey, 2010, p. 9)

2) Examine the role of Satanic cults, cult murders, and the occult as a phenomenon of
American culture.
-Early civilizations explained mass murder and serial murders as they deriving from demonology
or the belief that life events were controlled by external forces or spirits. (Hickey, 2010, p. 37)
- Past and modern cultures believed mental illness to be a sign of possession.
Cult-related activities are closely related to the ideation of demonology and notions of evil
