UNIT 4 APPLICATION SECURITY 2
Distinguish Operating System (OS) component from architecture.
An operating system (OS) is a collection of software that plays a vital role in the
management of the computer hardware and also manages its programs. It conceals the
complexity of the device, manages the resources which play a critical role in the computation,
and provides protection (Barney, 2010). On the other hand, computer architecture is a set of rules
and ways that explains the organization, functioning, and implementation of the computer
system. It merely describes the programming and capability of the computer system. The
architecture determines the users' needs concerning the structure and designs them to be met
within the existing technological constraints.
Describe the underlying Windows OS architecture.
The basic windows OS architecture consists of several layers. First is the electrical and
electronic component which contains a simple electric component which supplies power in the
computer. Second is the digital logic level which is the element which store, manipulate, and
transmit data in a binary form (Barney, 2010). The machine level is also the party of the
architecture and contains the essential elements of a computer such as a processor and memory.
There is also the software which directs all the internal operations of the computer and the
application software which solves the user-oriented problems.
Discuss access control and authorization.
Access control is a process which involves the management and identity of the systems.
It is concerned with the kind of data to be protected from certain users of the computer. The
other aspect of access control is how the operating systems enforce the policy on access control
(Marchenko, 2014). On the other hand, the organization is where it is checked whether the user
of a computer system has permission to do or access something.
