7- An installation pieces by "Dread" Scott Tyler's was part of a controversy that
ended up in court. Use the accompanying links to enhance your knowledge of
the incident. Write a reaction essay answering the questions below.
Art is one of the most powerful ways through which humanity can express their inner
feelings and attitudes towards issues affecting society. The installation "What Is the Proper Way
to Display a U.S. Flag?" by Dread Scott is an example of such expression as it called upon
individuals to express their views and feelings towards the flag and what it represented. As an
expression of individual feelings and views, the art installation should not have been removed.
Despite eliciting increased and diverse views towards the artwork, the installation should have
been left to run its course. The viewers' comment reflects a diverse of opinions which art is all
about. While others might like a piece of art, others may not, others may hold negative views
towards it, and others might hate the artwork. The different opinions raised by the viewers
depend on what the installation means to everyone, which is what art is all about.
Personally, the decision of whether to stand on the flag or not depends on the view of the country
at the time.
In an era of racism and segregation, I would have stepped on the flag as the events in the
country would not have made me proud. However, in an era of patriotism and togetherness, I
would have resisted from stepping on the flag. From the interpretation of the First Amendment, I
believe that Tyler was acting under his rights as art is a form of speech that should not be
prohibited. While the installation elicited mixed reactions with a legal action being brought
against Scotts, criticizing the government and its symbols is neither anti-patriotism nor a crime.
Individuals should be left to express their views for or against the government and should not be
judged as being not anti-patriotic or such an action being referred to as a crime. The decision by
