IRANIAN THEOCRACY
Discuss whether Iran is really a theocracy. Iran has an Expediency Council that decides when it
is in the state's interest to follow Islamic doctrine. Would this suggest the country is a theocracy
or something else? What other elements of Iranian government structure and operation support
your argument that Iran is or is not a theocracy?
Theocracy is a form of government where a state is ruled by religious leaders. . Under the
amendment of constitution of 1979, Iran is deemed as a theocratic Islamic republic. Its
government is appointed rather than elected, where appointed bodies as well as officials possess
real power. On the surface, Iran has similar type of government as any other democratic state
such as a powerful judiciary setup, a boisterous legislature as well as a president who comes
through general election. But the difference is that it is regarded as an Islamic theocracy where
one man who is known as a supreme leader, has its political and ideological control over major
function of the country (Parsa, M. 2011).
The Islamic religious advisory board appoints the Supreme leader of state who is also
deemed as a head of state. It’s the prime responsibility of the supreme leader to appoint members
of expediency council that have its influence over Guardian council and the parliament of the
state. In case of any dispute arises between parliament and Guardian council, the expediency
council play its role as a mediator and resolves the issue. This council is also serving as an
advisory body to the supreme leader according to the constitution of 1979 of state. Thus, it can
be concluded that the Iran is a theocratic republic, where power on all matter lies with the
Supreme leader and the expediency council, Pbs. (n.d.). The influences of president and the
parliament on the state's affairs largely depend on the consent of the Supreme leader.
