Introduction
The three-skill approach to leadership is one of the major theories that suggest that good
leaders tend to have a particular set of skills. These skills develop over time through learning. This
approach recognizes that many people have the potential to become leaders, and this can be
enhanced by training and experiences, which helps them become effective leaders. Thus, exposure
training, involvement and experiences with a set of activities prepares people for certain positions
of leadership. The approach, therefore, identifies three skills that a good leader should possess
(Northouse, 2016). In this paper, an overview of the three-skill approach to leadership and an
example where it has been applied will be provided.
Overview of the Three Skills Approach to Leadership
The first of these skills is technical skills. These skills refer to expertise and knowledge
which is required in a specific activity or work type. They may include the necessity for specialized
knowledge that is necessary when the application of unique techniques, methods and process.
Technical skills are developed through either on-the-job trainings or vocational training programs.
Second is the human skills which refer to people skills that are required by people to work
successfully with superiors, peers and followers (Northouse, 2016).
These skills include written and verbal communication skills, ability to motivate and create
positive team force among people. A leader who possesses high levels of these skills tends to be
conscious of their behavior and its effect on their followers. Last is the conceptual skills which
refer to skills which allow a particular leader to be thoughtful and work with concepts, hypotheses
and ideas. Leaders who possess high conceptual skills tend to be good when it comes to working
with hypothetical conditions and abstract concepts. Some of the essential conceptual skills
