In the process of an artist producing a piece, several elements would help those who analyze
artwork to determine the key aspects an artist attempted to express. In certain cases, the artist is able
to provide a deep introspection into their psyche in a profound manner that would often have
enthusiasts gravitate towards the artwork itself. Such dramatic expression is especially exuded when
the artist themselves are undergoing a period of inner turmoil, which may give them even more
impetus to use art as a means of self-expression.

A notable example of such an artist is Vincent Van
Gogh, an artist who was able to produce profound artistry while being gripped by a dark cloud of
mental illness. While Van Gogh led a checkered life filled with mental struggles, many of his pieces
have been revered posthumously, allowing his legacy to live on past his untimely demise. In line with
this, the purpose of this essay is to examine Van Gogh as an artist, determining ways in which his
personal struggles were brought to life through his artwork.

The examination will consider three
paintings by way of their artist’s use manipulation of innate stylistic effects.
For there to be a deep examination into the artwork, the artist must be considered. Such
examination helps give the artwork context and gives insight into their inspiration. In the case of Van
Gogh, several elements from his personal life help provide a deep perspective into his inner person.
Having been born in 1853 in a catholic province called Groot-Zundert, located in the southern part of
the Netherlands, Van Gogh was raised up in a strong Christian upbringing. Van Gogh was the oldest
surviving child of Theodorus van Gogh, a Reformed church minister, and his wife, Anna Carbentus.
Having been brought up by church minister, Van Gogh's was believed to have been brought up in an
upper-middle-class home, especially with the church having supplied the Van Gogh family with
