Deutsche Bank is one of the world's top financial companies. It has faced many
challenges, all triggered or linked to the legacy software and lack of a system that can handle
vast numbers of transactions and large bank operations. The bank incurred costs in paying fines
and paying regulators after being charged based on selling toxic mortgages and other problems
associated with the integrity of particular data fields. The penalties led to a crisis. However, the
case study indicates that even without the crisis, Deutsche bank was expensive to operate due to
its antiquated technology.
Several factors contributed to the chain of problems caused by the lack of a reliable IT
system. Some of the management roles include but are not limited to ensuring high customer
service standards. According to the case study, Deutsche Bank had over a hundred different
booking systems for trades in London. Further, there were no standard codes to identify clients
within the 100 disparate systems.
Amid all the confusion, each system could use a different code for the same client,
making it impossible to know how all the different systems served a client. Another management
factor is the lack of a functioning strategy to create motivation. Deutsche Bank was promoting
unhealthy competition. Instead of motivating the teams, it dug a deeper hole in the IT, whereby
teams continued to use different systems and were reluctant to share their data. The bank could
then reconcile all the data from the various systems by hand before processing and recording the
trades.
Acquisition and mergers were some of the organizational factors that further deteriorated
the problem of antiquated technology. After mergers and acquisitions, Deutsche Bank was not
