DATA COLLECTION METHODS 2
Data collection is a process that involves gathering, collecting, measuring, and analysis of
information to verify accurate insights for research. The process should follow standard
procedure and regulation of data collection. There are various methods for data collection in any
given study. To ensure that your research is thorough and up to the standard, the integration of
these methods is vital. One should consider the basis or the type of study to ascertain the right
method to apply in the process. These methods include quantitive and qualitative data collection
methods (Creswell & Creswell, 2017).
Quantitative involves testing of hypotheses from theory. Under this, there are specific
methods of data collection, such as experiments, observation, recording, and surveys such as
interviews, face-to-face, and questionnaires. Qualitative data collection methods are used to give
information vital to understanding the process behind observed results. Specific methods under
this category include interactive interviews whereby a respondent may be interviewed many
times, document review from databases, focus groups, and observation.
Let us consider the use of questionnaires which is common under quantitative method. A
questionnaire is a method that comprises of a series of questions for collecting data from a
respondent. The Statistical Society of London established this method in 1838. Questionnaires
are useful because they are practical, saves time by collecting vast amounts of data from people
in a short period, and ease of quantifying data. They are also scalable, cost-effective, and also
offer respondent anonymity which helps to maintain confidentiality, a vital key in research.
However, questionnaires may lack validity since you cannot tell how truthful is the respondent.
Also, respondents may understand the questions differently, giving answers as per their
understanding which may not be valid due to interpretation issues. There is also survey fatigue,
skipped questions by the respondent sometimes out of ignorance, and are unsuitable for some
