MIGRATION 2
Migration
1. How the journey of migration is shaped by gender
According to the film, the conditions in sending countries and migrations journeys have
been shaped through gender in various ways. This means that the actions or rather the
experiences faced are highly determined by the gender of each individual. The experience of
men are quite different from that of female, which makes them get exposed to both positive and
negative environmental atmospheres. The sending countries in this case are less affected with the
gender aspect as opposed to the migration journeys. There are various instances demonstrated in
the film which can be used in describing various ways in which gender has been used in shaping
the journey of the affected.
Most immigrants move out of their countries with the hope of getting better lives, which
in most cases turns out to be completely different. Most women from the film complain of
having been raped by people who take advantage of their nationality. This makes most of them
regret coming to the United States in the first place. This means that being a woman exposes the
victims to the dangers of being raped and other kinds of inhuman activities that are carried out by
other people in the United States. Women are also seen to be weak as opposed to men, and this
has contributed to them facing more of physical harms.
The third example of experience which results from gender difference is the plight men,
both in their sending countries and their immigration journeys. The society expects men to be
strong and work harder to ensure they bring something to the table. This defines the reason as to
why most of them complain of not being given jobs in the foreign countries, and if they get then
the wages are very low. This pressure from the society towards men forces them to be search for
better jobs wherever they go, therefore making them more exposed to job frustrations.
